KAILAPA HAWAIIAN HOMESTEAD

Location: Hawaiʻi Island, Kohala Coast

Kailapa’s motivation for going solar

In 2019, Kailapa Hawaiian Homestead established a community resilience plan to create a roadmap for future land use development, promote the community’s ability to thrive, and become a truly Resilient Hawaiian Community. Their vision is built on six values: self sufficiency; community cohesiveness; Native Hawaiian culture, knowledge and traditional practices; technology and education; health and safety; and resource management.

In 2022, Carbon Free Hawaiʻi began speaking with Kailapa Community Association about the assistance our program could offer their homeowners in support of the resilience plan.

In February 2023, 10 homeowners were selected to receive solar panel installation and ownership at no cost to their families. HonokaÊ»a-based solar engineers, Renewable Energy Services, our program partner, have since been designing systems for these households and begin installation in Fall 2023.
